Location - On the eastern Black Sea coast of the country near to the border with Romania.
Weather - A mild continental climate with long autumns and warm sunny summers. Varna receives about two thirds of the average rainfall for Bulgaria meaning its wooded hills are lush throughout summer. January and February can be very cold at times, with snow blizzards.
Level Of English Very good, most speak English well and if they dont, will go out of their way to help.
Prices Generally quite cheap and good quality goods and services.
Eating Out - Restaurants in the main town centre are not brilliant but quite nice and reasonably priced. There are cheaper restaurants down by the Golden Sands beach area, where the food and service is excellent.
Courtesy Excellent. In the main very friendly, helpful and welcoming. Smaller hotels are very reasonably priced. I can highly recommend the Solaris hotel.
Driving Generally quite good. Drivers courteous and law abiding. The main roads are quite good but stray off these and you will find pot holes and other hazards.
Public Transport - Generally pretty good. Buses and trams are quite frequent, if not a bit old, and the taxi fares are not too high.
Places Of Interest/Attractions - Varna city (The Cathedral), the Fountain square 'Independence' and the famous Theatre House. The nearby seaside resorts of St. Constantine & Helena and The Golden Sands are near to Euxinograde, the summer residence of the last Bulgarian kings. St. Constantine was one of the first Black Sea resorts in Bulgaria. It has an ancient history with a beach strip around 5 km long and 20-30 m wide covered with fine golden sand. The construction of St. Constantine began in 1908 in the vicinity of the St.Constantine and St. Elena monastery.
Other Remarks - Not one of the most attractive beach holiday destinations but it is extremely good value, and very relaxing. The water temperature of the Black Sea here can get quite warm and the quality is pretty good. Many of the larger hotels e.g. The Grand, have their own indoor swimming pools open to the public for a very small fee.
