Wales Holiday Diary

13th June 2012

Today we went to visit Anglesey Peninsula. All sorts! We visited: a little kind of Zoo, called Pili Palas, with butterflies, reptiles and birds – the butterflies were so beautiful and colorful! And some of them land on your clothes and could watch them closely! I enjoyed very much watching them! Then the ruins of the castle Beaumaris - I wasn’t so impressed.

We stopped at Amlwch (pronounce that if you can!), an area rich in copper. Everything looked very strange, like on another planet! And the final destination was to see a famous model village in Newborough, built at a 1:12 scale. Very nice and interesting and with 2 little trains that you could see passing every 5 minutes! All the details were so nicely made, you could hear music in the church for example! Fortunately the weather was again nice, with a few clouds, but warm.

We arrived at home very late, at about 5.30. Also because on our way back we looked for a “fish&chips” shop. The idea was that being near the sea we could have some nice fresh fish. But it was impossible. Almost all these shops (all actually) were closed. The explanation we received was that it wasn’t yet started the season for holidays!!!!!

We couldn’t understand that. We didn’t pass only through resorts. There were towns, villages… places where people lived, worked! So how to have closed shops like “fish&chips”???!!! But everywhere we received the same answer: they are open only in full season! No more comment!

So we arrived at our guest house, we rested a little bit and then went to have dinner in the same place we went the previous evening. Also here we found the service a little bit odd, but we liked very much the food and we decided that we will come the following day as well. I suppose that we realized that they were like that generally and anyhow the food was very good in all of the pubs.

Of course after dinner followed the mystery tour. We went somewhere where we saw a nice lake. We had fun watching some children trying to learn paddling a boat. There were quite a few boats and about 2 or 3 coaches.

As usual we enjoyed very much our mystery tour and we returned at our place at about 9.30 and literally dropped off!

14th June

Today we chose to visit Portmeirion. It’s a real village in Gwynedd, North Wales, created by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. It was the project of his life being an architect. They say that he looked for a specific place for this village everywhere and he found it near where he lived! He started to build it in 1925, when he bought the land. And he continued to build, mould the idea he had in mind up till 1975.

The village is also famous for being the place where were filmed scenes from The Prisoner, a TV serial. If you visit it by yourself, without a guide to give you explanations, it doesn’t look so interesting. When we decided to leave Mother Rita saw a mini-car that was used to take you around and the person who drove it was also a guide. Our guide happened to be a young girl, very nice and a very good guide. And welsh!

It was very interesting the tour we made and the guide gave us all the tips about the houses. If you looked carefully at the houses you could see that some had false windows, created for the symmetry; another one had false doors and walls to give the impression of bigger dimension then it was in reality. Everything was so interesting! I think that Sir Clough Williams-Ellis tried to apply and play with what he knew about architecture. Again, unbelievable for Wales, the weather was warm and nice, with a few clouds, but no rain.

We returned at our guest house at about 14.30 and tried to rest a little bit. Simon was very much behind with the sleep and you could see that he is really tired.
After a little rest we went for dinner in the same place we went the other evening. We liked there! And of course the mystery tour, even though started to rain. We didn’t care, we were in the car! This time we went to a big lake called Bala. We couldn’t see a lot because of the rain. We can’t complain, it was the only time when it rain during this little holiday! I am sure that our friends will envy us when I’ll tell them how lucky we were with the weather! So having rain only one afternoon is not so bad, is it ?!

15th June

We started our journey back immediately after breakfast. We said our good byes to our hosts and there we are. It was a lovely holiday and I enjoyed it very much! I hope the other two (Simon and mother Rita) did too!
