Rhodes Holiday Diary 2

6th October 2020

The first day of a real holiday!

Now I'm sitting up in bed and drinking a glass of that white wine! We both slept well. Being surrounded by so much vegetation, the whole villa keeps a very nice cool air inside, so the temperature in our room was pleasant without the need of the air conditioning. Anyhow today it was only 32 Celsius degrees in the sun, compared with yesterday when it was up to 42 around lunch time! We were thinking to ask our host if it is normal to be so hot here in October... It is more bearable here than in Cyprus when it is hot because the humidity here is not so high.

In the morning we went to Aghati Beach and I took quite a few videos with our camera doing snorkelling. Then we went to the same restaurant as yesterday. There are two young nice waiters, very good with details in serving, which makes you feel good. Simon liked very much their grilled pork chop. I'm thinking maybe tomorrow I'll try some squid or sword-fish. I never had it and I'm curious and always keen to try something new!

After lunch we returned to our room for a little rest. We both fell asleep, so we went back to the beach about five. Unfortunately I wasn't able to take pictures or videos with our camera because the special case it was in, to be able to use it in water started to leak. Pity because I had an adventure. As I said, both sides of the beach have rocks. In the morning I went on one side near the rocks to explore the bottom of the sea and in the afternoon I chose the other side, with less people, thinking that maybe the fish will be more bold and indeed they were! At a moment in front of me – I didn't realise where from – appeared a creature, filiform and long, about one and a half metres, with a head and mouth same, very long, not only the body. The fish didn't seem scared by my presence there, exactly the opposite, I felt he was studying me, same as I was studying him! He started to slowly move around me – I can't say swim, because I couldn't detect any movement of his body, it was just like it was propelled by unseen forces. I tried to keep facing him, but I didn't feel very comfortable, to be honest. So I swam further and towards the shore. I was glad to find the same fish on the internet: The Blue Spotted Cornet Fish

I am really sorry I couldn't use the camera, it was so impressive the image of that fish so close to me! We had a chat, Simon and I, on our chairs on the beach, me telling him about my little adventures under the water. Then we decided to leave, it was getting dark, the sun almost gone below the horizon... Good night!

7th October 2020

Another nice, good day!

We slept quite alright and the moment we woke up, after the traditional coffee and Simon's 'puff', we went to Aghati beach. I went exploring the land first, on the rocky hill, saw some goats, took some videos. Of course that after followed the snorkelling. Simon worked quite a lot last night trying to sort out the case of the camera. I didn't think that he will be successful but he did! With his patience and his skill of course he did! Thus today I had back my camera ready to be used in the water! I'm not a very good swimmer but I started to be more confident about myself, to get closer to the rocks under the water and a higher depth. It is really great! I don't think I will ever get bored with snorkelling, I am fascinated! Simon tried too, but he doesn't feel comfortable, he doesn't like it, though he is a very good swimmer.

I couldn't find my 'friend' from yesterday afternoon though I looked. But today I made another friend. It was a funny fish, an odd one that hides in the sand on the bottom of the sea. I saw one in the morning, but not so well, because the speed with which he was moving was really high and I couldn't keep up. But later I managed to spot one because I could see his eyes above the sand and a tiny trail that marked his body. I waited and he moved so quickly that I didn't see where he went. Searching I saw him, but this time he wasn't hiding, just waiting for me to spot him again. He seemed to wait and say: “Come on, what are you doing?” I came closer but he disappeared again! He did this about 4-5 times! It was like we played hide and seek! I managed to film all this.

I'm looking forward to watching the videos together with Simon. He will also edit them, eliminate bits that are not looking good! At the moment we just rest and chat and I have a glass of wine!
